I'd have to think that'd be the earliest anthropomorphic ape-man in fiction. Too bad the trophy can't go to Gleek. Or that orang from 'Every Which Way But Loose.' Alors. EC Zombies were pretty bloody if I rememebr right, so I wouldn't dismiss them out of hand. I rememebr reading that Romero was a huge EC fan. I have to get around to picking up McSweeney's Treasury of Thrilling Tales. Its on the list (now to get to a bookstore when Jess (my Jess that is) isn't watching!)
