Alexander Street Press has put online thousands of newsreels from the 1920s through the 1960s, free until April 30. (Or so they say: I can’t find “thousands” on the site but there are a bunch.)

Ah, the dulcet tones of Ed Herlihy…
This is a very cool site, not only are there transcripts, but the text is highlighted real time to match what is being spoken. Of course I searched for Hiroshima, the first footage after the bombs, which I had previously only seen still images of : http://ahivfree.alexanderstreet.com/View/526406 Outside of the distruction, what’s mildly disturbing is that the newsreel continues from Japan to footage of Harry S. Truman throwing out a ball at a baseball game, which a president hadn’t done for 5 years. The juxtaposition somehow makes it extra eerie.
American History in Video is up for free through November 15th at http://ahivfree.alexanderstreet.com
