Marty's mind doesn't change instantaneously when he alters his own past. The part of Back to the Future that gave me trouble was not that the future changes instantaneously when Marty alters the past, but that Marty changes gradually (eg when his siblings disappear from a photo (while the photo of an empty bit of yard remains) and then he starts fading into nothingness.
